an empty bucketThere used to be a pond behind my house. It could hardly be called a pond; it resembled a marsh enclosed by trees: the earth soft and sticky, dragging feet down into the murky waters with a loud smack. Our neighbors would carelessly abandon household appliances in the mud and let them sink so that the  rusted bulks of a refrigerator, bicycle, and washing machine protruded through the sludge. I hated the quagmire, especially in the summer when the humidity and moisture in the air seemed to feed the bacteria that ate away at the trash yielding a pungent odor rich in festering meat. But there was nothing to be done about the ignorance an empty bucket
